METALLIC MINING
Mining for gold, silver, and other metals and minerals has devastating effects on local landscapes, ecosystems, and water sources. The ecological crises of deforestation, species loss, contamination of water sources, and climate change are all compounded as mining accelerates around the globe, especially in vulnerable regions. Human communities that are subject to extractivist mining practices are either displaced entirely, losing access to vital natural goods, or suffer the effects of contaminted air, soil, and water in their communities. Furthermore, mining often violates the cultural identity and spiritual integrity of the communities that it impacts, especially Indigenous and Afro-descendent communities with ancestral ties to the land, waterways, and their more-than-human relations. The following films introduce viewers to the problem of mining in Latin America in general, and two specific cases of resistance to mining in Central and North America.
